These were the standard choice at the time. But metal halide bulbs are only rated for 6,000 to 15,000 hours of use. For a court that gets regular evening play, that works out to a full bulb and ballast replacement roughly every 2 to 3 years.

The Real Cost Of Keeping Old Metal Halide Lights Running
The dimming is only the visible part of the problem. There are three layers underneath it that make metal halide expensive to keep running.
Access Is Expensive
Tennis court light poles are tall, usually 6 to 12 metres. Reaching the fixture to change a bulb needs scaffolding or a lift, not a stepladder. For most MCSTs, it rarely makes financial sense to book scaffolding just to change one or two bulbs, so failed lights often sit unrepaired for months.
Metal Halide Needs Four Components To Work
A metal halide fixture needs a bulb, a ballast, an igniter, and a capacitor just to strike up, and even then it can take 15 to 20 minutes to reach full brightness. Each of these parts can fail on its own, which is why metal halide courts tend to have more frequent and less predictable breakdowns than a single component system.
Replacement Bulbs Are Getting Harder To Find
Metal halide bulbs contain mercury. Singapore is a party to the Minamata Convention on Mercury, and the National Environment Agency has already moved to restrict certain mercury added lighting products under the Environmental Protection and Management Act, with prohibitions on some fluorescent lamp types taking effect from 1 January 2027 and 2028. Metal halide has not been named in this specific list, but it falls under the same mercury reduction direction, and manufacturers worldwide are already shifting production toward LED. In practice, this means stock of replacement metal halide bulbs and ballasts is thinning out, and sourcing them in Singapore is only going to get harder.
Why Simply Changing The Bulb Does Not Solve The Problem
The obvious fix looks simple. Change the dead bulb, keep the rest of the fixture, move on.
In practice, this rarely works out. The scaffolding cost to reach the fixture is the same whether you are replacing one bulb or the entire fitting. The ballast, igniter, and capacitor are usually close to end of life too, since they were installed at the same time as the bulb. And even after the repair, the court is back to a fixture that still needs 15 to 20 minutes to warm up, still draws 1000W, and is still built around a lamp technology that is becoming harder to source.
